DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold standard for measuring bone density and identifying early signs of osteopenia or osteoporosis, which are conditions that increase the risk of fractures as we age. A quick, painless scan of the hips and spine can reveal whether your bones are thinning, even before symptoms appear.
At Pittsburgh Imaging and Wellness, we’ve been providing safe diagnostic imaging since 1993. Our technologists use advanced equipment to deliver precise measurements, and our board-certified radiologists interpret every scan with expert care. Whether you're screening as a preventative measure or monitoring a known condition, we make the process clear, fast, and comfortable, all in an outpatient setting.

A DEXA scan is a noninvasive imaging test that uses very low levels of X-ray energy to measure the mineral content and density of your bones. The scan typically focuses on the hips and spine, where bone loss is most likely to lead to fractures.
During the exam, you’ll lie flat on a padded table while a scanning arm slowly passes over your body. The machine sends two different X-ray beams through your bones, and a computer calculates your bone density based on how much passes through. The test is completely painless and usually takes 10-15 minutes.

While anyone can develop osteoporosis, certain individuals are at higher risk. Your doctor may recommend a DEXA scan if you:
Early detection is key to preventing fractures and managing bone health proactively.

DEXA scans are quick and easy. You’ll remain fully clothed (though you may be asked to remove any metal objects), lie still on the table, and relax while the scanner takes measurements. There are no injections, no discomfort, and no downtime afterward.
Most patients are in and out of our office within 30 minutes, and results are typically available to your physician within hours.

Yes, DEXA scans are extremely safe. They use much lower levels of radiation than a typical chest X-ray, making them suitable for routine screening. At Pittsburgh Imaging and Wellness, all scans are performed using ACR-accredited equipment and interpreted by board-certified radiologists, so you can feel confident in both the safety and accuracy of your results.

There is very little preparation required. We recommend:

The cost of a DEXA scan can vary, but in most cases, DEXA scans are covered by insurance when medically necessary, particularly for individuals over age 65 or those with known risk factors. We accept a wide range of insurance plans and can confirm your benefits prior to the appointment.

You can give us a call during regular business hours to speak with our team or request an appointment online. We’ll guide you through the process and make sure you’re fully prepared for your visit.
