What is a mammogram, and how does it work?

A mammogram is a specialized X-ray used to detect early signs of breast cancer or other abnormalities in breast tissue. The test uses a low dose of radiation to take high-resolution images of the breast from multiple angles.

During the exam, your breast is gently compressed between two plates for a few seconds to spread out the tissue and get a clear image. While this may feel slightly uncomfortable, the process is very quick, typically taking less than 10 minutes total.

When should I start getting mammograms?

Guidelines vary slightly, but most experts recommend:

  • A baseline mammogram between ages 35–40
  • Annual mammograms starting at age 40
  • Earlier or more frequent screening if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors

How should I prepare for a mammogram?

Preparing is simple but important for getting the most accurate results:

  • Do not wear deodorant, lotions, creams, or powders on your chest or underarms
  • Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top
  • If you’ve had a prior mammogram elsewhere, bring previous films or CDs with you, or have them sent to our office in advance

We’ll give you clear instructions when you book, and we’re happy to answer any questions ahead of time.

Does a mammogram hurt?

Some patients experience mild discomfort due to the compression of the breast, but the procedure is very brief and well-tolerated by most. Our technologists are highly trained to ensure the process is as gentle and comfortable as possible.

If you're particularly sensitive or nervous, let us know! We’ll take extra care to support you through the exam.

Is mammography safe?

Yes! Mammograms use very low doses of radiation, and the benefits of early cancer detection far outweigh any risk. At Pittsburgh Imaging and Wellness, we follow American College of Radiology (ACR) safety guidelines and use modern equipment designed to keep exposure as low as reasonably possible.

Mammograms are one of the most proven, effective tools in breast cancer screening, especially when done regularly.

How much does a mammogram cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans fully cover screening mammograms for women over age 40. If you’re coming in for a diagnostic mammogram (e.g., due to symptoms), your coverage may vary depending on your plan. We accept most major insurance providers and will gladly verify your benefits beforehand.
