What is an MRI and how does it work?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a non-invasive test that uses magnetic fields to create detailed images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use any radiation. It’s especially useful for examining soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, nerves, the brain, and spinal cord.

When you get an MRI, you'll lie down on a padded table that slides into the machine. The scan is painless, though you may hear loud knocking or thumping sounds while the images are being taken; this is completely normal. At a trusted MRI diagnostic center like Pittsburgh Imaging and Wellness, your scan is handled by certified technologists, and your images are reviewed by ACR-accredited radiologists for accuracy.

What can an MRI help diagnose?

MRI is a safe, radiation-free way to capture detailed images of organs, soft tissues, and bones. These scans are used to help diagnose a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Joint injuries (shoulders, knees, ankles, etc.)
  • Spine problems (herniated discs, spinal stenosis)
  • Brain or neurological issues
  • Muscular or tendon injuries
  • Tumors or abnormalities

Please note: We do not perform MRIs for the breast, chest, or prostate.

What makes your MRI machine different from others in the area?

Unlike many traditional MRI machines, our 1.5 Tesla Ultra Wide Short Bore MRI is built with patient comfort in mind. It's wider and shorter than standard machines, giving it a more "open" feel, which is ideal for those with claustrophobia or anxiety. The bore is large enough to fit patients up to 350 pounds comfortably.

This machine still offers the power and resolution of a high-field MRI, which means you get detailed, accurate results without the confined, uncomfortable experience of a closed MRI. In fact, it's one of the only machines of its kind in Western Pennsylvania available at a free-standing, cost-friendly imaging center.

Are there any limitations or restrictions with MRI scans?

Because MRI uses strong magnets, certain metal implants or devices in your body may make you ineligible for the scan. Let us know ahead of time if you have any of the following:

  • Brain aneurysm clips
  • Certain cochlear implants
  • A pacemaker
  • Metal fragments in your eyes
  • Certain implanted electronic devices

We’ll review your history and determine if MRI is safe for you. If not, we’ll help coordinate a suitable alternative.

How should I prepare for my MRI appointment?

Preparing is easy! Here’s what to do before you arrive:

  • Eat normally and take your regular medications (unless your doctor says otherwise).
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes without zippers or metal. Avoid wearing jewelry or other accessories that are made of metal.
  • Bring your physician’s order, insurance card, referral form, and any previous imaging you’ve had (CT, MRI, or X-rays).

Our team will walk you through everything. If you have any additional questions about how to prepare, just give our front desk a call.

How long does an MRI take, and when will I get results?

Most MRI scans take 30 to 55 minutes depending on the body part being imaged. Once your scan is complete, one of our board-certified radiologists will review the images and send a report to your referring provider within 24 to 48 hours.

This fast turnaround means you and your doctor can move forward quickly with the care you need.

Is an MRI covered by insurance?

In most cases, yes. MRI scans are covered by insurance when they’re ordered by a physician for diagnostic purposes. We work with most major insurance providers and are happy to verify your benefits ahead of time.
